How to Decrease Your Electric Bill

For many homes, the electric bill is often among the biggest utility bills.

We know how frustrating it can be to spend too much money on your electricity bill, and that's why we’ve put together this list of simple ways to decrease your electric bill and save money this year.

7 Simple Ways to Save on Electric Bills

We’ve all heard our parents say to "turn off the lights after leaving a room," and they’re not wrong, but here are more DIY ways you can make a difference in your monthly electricity bill.

  1. Install a programmable thermostat: A programmable thermostat can help you save up to 10% on your home heating and cooling costs, including electricity, if you have an air conditioner, electric furnace, heat pump, or mini splits.

  2. Install energy-efficient light bulbs: LED light bulbs use 75% less energy than incandescent light bulbs and last up to ten times longer.

  3. Install dimmer switches: While you're busy installing new light bulbs, consider adding dimmer switches to your home. A dimmer switch decreases the amount of energy running to your lights. Not only do dimmers save on electricity, but they extend the life of your light bulbs.

  4. Make your home airtight: Walk around your home and find any "weak areas" that may be letting in cool or hot air. Sealing cracks or leaks around doors and windows will help your home maintain a more consistent temperature and keep drafts out in the cold months.

  5. Upgrade appliances: Replacing old appliances with new, energy-efficient models saves you real money on your electric bills. When you go to replace an old appliance, look for a new model with an ENERGY STAR label.

  6. Take shorter showers: A five-minute shower uses approximately one-third less water than a ten-minute shower. Not to mention that this water needs to be heated and heating water can be expensive. When you cut back on your hot water usage, you’ll not only save on your water bill, but you’ll also save on your electricity (or gas) bill.

  7. Replace your HVAC air filters: Perform this easy task every three months. If you’re consistent with air filter replacement, your air conditioner will run more efficiently, and so will your electric furnace, boiler, heat pump, or mini split. You’ll also save on potentially costly down-the-line repairs on your big-ticket HVAC appliances.

Monitoring Your Usage and Spending

Sometimes just a few changes can make a substantial difference in both usage and what you pay each month for electricity, which will certainly help your bank account. However, if you’ve made some of the adjustments and/or upgrades mentioned above and are still receiving a monthly electric bill that is too high, it may be time to call in a professional.

Start with a periodic inspection by local Birmingham Electrical Services. We can identify electrical problems that may be contributing to a higher monthly bill, and offer some solutions. To get started call (0121) 403-0000 or request a an appointment online today!
